Report on Reunion 2005 - Harper Clan Visits Pendleton County
photo
Harpers came from far and wide to see beautiful Pendleton County during the Harper Reunion the first weekend in August.  This event celebrated 255 years of Harpers in America.  Harpers from Washington state, Texas, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia converged on Canaan Valley Resort for three days of fun and family.  At Friday night’s outdoor barbeque, cousins gathered around a poster showing their descendancy lines from Philip Harper the Pioneer to see how they fit into the family tree.   They were entertained by a band led by Jeremy Wanless of Elkins.  Saturday’s bus tour took attendees all over Pendleton County visiting Harper homeplaces and cemeteries.  First stop was Harper’s Old Country Store in Seneca Rocks, followed by a visit to Blake Hedrick’s house which was originally built by Jacob Harper (1752 – 1826).  The bus tour included a visit to the Pendleton County Courthouse, where Nancy Gonshour displayed Philip Harper’s original will which was written and signed in 1793.  Reunion participants also had an opportunity to do some research in the well-preserved historic court records.  Following was a lunch at Town Park catered by Puttin’ On The Ritz, before the bus continued on to the Nicholas Harper cemetery in Cave, and the Leonard Harper house near Circleville now owned by the Warner family.
Greg Adamson of Onego, winner of the Harper Hero Award, gave a slide show at Saturday evening’s banquet at Canaan Valley.  His subject was Dr. Eli Akim Harper of San Diego, who was born in 1825 at Harpers Mills near Shirley Lambert’s house.  Adamson rescued Dr. Harper’s historic memoirs and photos by purchasing them from eBay auctions in 2003.  These papers tell the stories of the earliest Harpers and Skidmores in America.
Sunday saw the Harper clan on top of Allegany Mountain as they toured land bought by Jacob Harper in 1814, most of which is still in the Harper family today.
The weekend ended with a farewell picnic lunch at the Buzz Harper farm.  Emails and addresses were shared as many said a tearful goodbye with plans to stay in touch and to visit Pendleton County again in the future.  Joe Harper, of Seneca Rocks, coordinated the three-day event.
